July 13, 2009 — Martina McBride's current release, "I Just Call You Mine," has gotten a lot of attention, both as a country release and as the theme song for the "Today" show'swedding contest.
It's hardly the first song she's done that had a romantic feel to it, but it's one that hits close to home for Martina. It reminds her very much of John McBride, with whom she celebrated her 21st anniversary in May.
"It is the way I feel about John," she says of the song. "He's a particularly great people-person, so the line really resonates to me about 'everyone that sees you always wants to know you' because they do. That's true. He has that thing that attracts people. So I can really identify with the song in that way. But you know what? I also sing it in some ways for other people in my life, too. And I think it's a song you can sing about lots of different people in your life from different perspectives, so I just love it. I feel like this song — everybody wants to have somebody they can sing this to, and everybody wants to have somebody feel this way about them. So it's a very universal feeling, and I just think it's beautiful."
Martina will be singing it in New York on Wednesday for Nick Cordes and Leigh Daniel, the winning couple in the "Today" contest. Later this month, she'll likely be singing "I Just Call You Mine" overseas when she kicks off a tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
