July 17, 2009 — Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers Band hail from a different era of country music, but their latest single, "Johnny Cash Is Dead (And His House Burned Down)," celebrates a number of stars from an even earlier era. Larry, Steve and Rudy Gatlin sit down with GAC's Nan Kelley to talk about the song on this week's edition of Top 20 Country Countdown.
"Johnny Cash Is Dead" might sound rude or demeaning at first, but Larry — who was friend of the Cash family — used it as a means of chronicling the evolutionary nature of music. With the blessing of Johnny's son, John Carter Cash, Larry used the melody from the Man In Black's "Big River" and paid homage to Waylon Jennings, Patsy Cline, Chet Atkins and Marty Robbins as well as Cash. And the reverb-heavy rockabilly track sounds so much like a Sun Records product that it's cool and fresh, rather than dated.
The song will appear on the Gatlins' next album, titled The Pilgrimage.
