April 21, 2009 — Jason Aldean's rise in country music almost didn't happen. He had a couple of deals with record companies that didn't quite pan out and was ready to leave Nashville when one more shot with an independent label called Broken Bow Records finally worked.
Since then, he's made a nice home for himself in country music, and his third album, Wide Open, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard country chart after selling more than 100,000 copies its first week of release. Jason doesn't appear to hold any rancor about the days when he struggled, but he hasn't forgotten that period either.
"I ended up having a lot of doors slammed in my face and a lot of guys not willing to give me the opportunity to show them what I could do," he told the 0AAssociated Press. "A lot of these guys I've run into over the last couple of years. A lot of them kind of look at me and shake their heads because they know I was in their office knocking on doors."
Jason's made his way by pushing the boundaries of country music's sound. He worked up a Guns N' Roses medley several years ago, and his current single, "She's Country," has crunchy, hard-rock chords underneath a rural lyrical theme and some banjo noodling. Ultimately, whatever happens, he's been able to do it all his way.
"If it ends tomorrow, I feel like I've had — in the few years I've been around — a pretty decent career," Jason said. "Hopefully, I'll be one of those guys who's around 15 or 20 years, but if not, I feel like I wasn't a one-hit wonder and was able to string together a few hits."
"It's Country" is currently in the Top 5 on country singles charts, and Jason's lined up a healthy summer tour schedule, including some dates as the opening act for Keith Urban.
