March 20, 2009 — Toby Keith's dedication to the military is well documented, and it'll be rewarded next week.
Toby is set to receive the Johnny "Mike" Spann Memorial Semper Fidelis Award during a New York ceremony held by the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation. The trophy is named for a former Marine Corps captain who was the first U.S. casualty in the war in Afghanistan.
Toby, of course, has made annual pilgrimages to the Middle East for years to bring entertainment and encouragement to the men and women serving on or near the front lines.
"Spending time with our soldiers around the world is something I've always regarded as a privilege and honor," Toby says. "I'm certainly happy to accept this award, but I won't forget for a second who's really doing the heavy lifting to keep this country safe. And that's why I'll keep going back and spending time with those good folks every chance I get."
Toby's not the only country act who's picked up a bit of recognition of late. Some of the other acts that recently received awards or were announced as recipients include:
• Mel Tillis, who joins the Florida Artists Hall of Fame on Wednesday. According to The Ocala Star-Banner, this past Tuesday was also Mel Tillis Day in Florida's Marion County.
• "My Heart Has A History" singer Paul Brandt will receive an honorary fine arts degree from the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, The Lethbridge Herald reported. Paul has plenty of time to work up a speech — the presentation takes place Oct. 17.
• Randy Owen will receive the inaugural Donald R. Myers Humanitarian Award from the Development District Association of Appalachia, according to Huntsville's WAAY-TV. He's being recognized for his charity work on behalf of the people of the Appalachian region, which stretches from Pennsylvania to northern Alabama.
• Charlie Daniels will receive the Joe M. Rodgers Spirit of America Award April 8 from the MTSU Executives-In-Residence program in Middle Tennessee, The Murfreesboro Post reported. The honor recognizes businesspeople who have made significant strides in government, education or civic and charitable work.
